There is no difference between something like "www" and "www2" other
that they usually signify "www2" (using your example) is a different
physical server than "www". There are no "types" to choose from, as
you could (or, rather, a network/server administrator could), in
theory, use any combination of letters legal under the DNS.
The use of "www" was completely arbitrary to begin with, but is often
useful to distinguish a network host running Web-server software at
"ONE_COMPANY.COM" from whatever server actually answers the door at
ONE_COMPANY.COM.
