This is the way I've always figured it worked: The descriptive
approach was mostly *browser* dependent, in that not all browsers
supported all the descriptive entities. But the numeric approach
could lead mostly to *platform*-dependent inconsistencies (ie:
Windows vs Mac).
For example, there's a spate of Windows-only Latin 1 decimal
character references ( though and through
plus which I've always figured only worked as advertised on
Windows machines ... which continues to make encoding for EN and EM
dashes a cross-platform problem.
