maybe you just had to also take into account the border width(s), - 
maybe - and that's why it didn't work in the first place...

I figured it out.  For some reason, i need to set the overall table 
width
to be greater than the sum of the individual column widths.  I had them
equal before.  I'm not sure why this is needed, but it works now.
