iis_applications thread: Remote Admin for IIS4

Message #1 by "Anthony Burley" <aburley@s...> on Wed, 22 Aug 2001 21:20:52 -0400
Hey Folks,

I found the answer to this question. I will share this with everyone.

Remote Admin with MMC Causes Error: Unable to Enumerate Files [Q186794]

PSS ID Number: Q186794
Article last modified on 04-30-1999

WINNT:4.0
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to remotely administer the Internet Information Server (IIS)
4.0
through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), the following error message
may
appear:

   Unable to enumerate files and directories because the following error
  occurred:

   The network name cannot be found.

CAUSE
=====

The C$ share has been removed from the system. The MMC uses the $ shares to
attach to the remote box and enumerate the files and directories to be
displayed
in the interface.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, reshare the drives on the remote server, making
sure the "$" character is added to the end of the drive letter.

try to ping the machine.
If you can't ping it- you have a connectivity problem that needs to be
looked at.
If you can- you might have a firewall preventing the connection
You might have different networking protocols.

What it comes down to is for some reason your machine says it can't see the
other machine.
