SQL server only comes with the Enterprise version of VS, which costs much
more.
You don't need SQL server to get started with Visual Interdev, however. I
have built a complete, functional website including a database with the
Professional version of VS. This will require a bit more work and some
familiarity with Access, but it can be done and will work just fine for
learning or even small applications.
