interdev_programming thread: Can't save the changes to NAVBARs as explained in the book.
Bob,
That's it! A problem that could not be solved by anyone for the last 2
weeks. WOW! Thanks a bunch. Now, I can make some more progress. What I
could not believe was that the files had to be written to at least with 1
character (which may or may not be followed by deleting the same
character) for the properties to be saved. I wonder what is the rationale
and if there is one, how can we pass this onto the author for future
versions?
Regards,
Sai
> Satyasai,
I just walked through these 15 steps from scratch by creating all new pages
in the Site diagram (I didn't add an existing search.htm <step 6> file
since
I don't normally have InterDev create one for me).
When I tried saving the change in properties to the default page, I was
suprised that they didn't save (like you said)!
After trying a few things, I thought it might be related to the fact that
the default page didn't have anything on it except the navbar stuff. So, I
typed a couple lines of text after the <P> </P> line. Then I right
clicked on the default page and clicked on "view in browser", it said I
needed to save, so I did and lo-and-behold, the page appeared as shown on
page 75.
It's been a while since I read this part of the book, and don't remember if
I saw this before, but I know, at one time, I had a bunch of trouble with
navbars, especially after upgrading from NT4.0 to W2K. There is a lot of
information in the Microsoft Knowlegebase pages on the web concerning
Navbars and their problems.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck

Subject: [interdev_programming] Can't save the changes to NAVBARs as
explained in the book.
Hi,
I am a beginner in web applications. I just started studying the book
"BEGINNING Web Development with VI 6" by Andrew Mumford (ISBN
1-861002-94-7). I have installed Visual Interdev 6 on my Windows 2000
Professional OS.
I am currently attempting to create my 1st web project, as explained in
Chapter 3. In particular, I am following the numbered steps for "Adding
Pages and Navigation" in Pages 72, 73, 74, and 75.
Problem: After I successfully execute the steps #s 1 thru 14, when I
attempt
to go to step# 15, I do not get the page displayed as shown. It just shows
the title "WROX CAMERAS". It does not display the two hyper links titled
"Contact Us" and "search".
Instead, I observed the following:
When I click on "ContactUs.htm" to view in browser, I see in the browser
the
following:
The title: Contact Us (just like the title "WROX CAMERAS" appeared, when
"default.htm" was opened in browser). This was followed by 2 bullets
beneath:
One of them is a non-click able bullet titled "Contact Us", and
another click able bullet labeled "search".
I also noticed that changes made to the Properties of 2nd NAVBARs of
"default.htm", "search.htm" "ContactUs.htm" are not saved even though, I do
exactly as instructed in steps 12, 13 and 14.
Can someone help. Any help is appreciated.
BTW, When I downloaded the files from the WROX site, those files looked OK,
meaning that they (ie people who worked with the author) were able to save
the changes made to the NAVBARs.
Thank you very much
Sincerely,
Sai Bhagavatula
