Larry,

To be honest I've not read a great deal of the "Doc JavaScript" columns,
so I couldn't say anything about his book other than that he does seem
to have his fans. :-)

I'd have to agree with Tom about the discussion of prototypes in
Flanagan's book -- FWIW I think that's what really got me grokking the
JS inheritance scheme 2 or 3 years back when it first came out. I also
enjoyed Nigel MacFarlane's piece about it in Pro JS immensely -- very
entertaining reading, I really like his style -- but Flanagan does a
very thorough job in just a few pages. JS the Def Ref only covers
through JS1.2 but it's still probably the best work on prototyping I've
seen, and I'm really anxious for the 4th ed. to come out. I think it's
safe to say that his book is one of the standards other authors about
scripting measure themselves against. I know I've referred to it
constantly ever since it first came out and my copy is well-worn.

If you have the chance to read any of the books that have been mentioned
over the next 2-4 weeks, please feel free to drop me a line offlist and
share your impressions with me, particularly any comparing the Wrox
Press offerings with the Flanagan book or the newest edition of Danny
Goodman's JS Bible (which I've not yet had the chance to read).

There's also been several discussions at the Builder Buzz website (
http://buzz.builder.com/ ) on this topic lately, which you might find of
interest.

regards,

jon.
