Thanks for the suggestion re: PHP. We will be having PHP available, and that
would solve the "am I alive" question. I did have an ulterior motive with
asking for a client-side script, because I was hoping to return some status
information from the actual PC, like screen size, some browser settings,
etc. so that I could see whether people have been manipulating the settings
(when they supposed to leave it alone)
