I run a Message Board on a web site using a CGI-Perl system which does
something like what you want. They way they did it was to parse out and
instance of ":-)" in the text and replace it with the smiley image.
Users can click on a smiley from a set displayed on the form page and
Javascript will insert the appropriate text version (Alex's code) which the
server parses out and replaces with the image on view. You could just as
easily insert the appropriate HTML image link. (This system parses the text
because it gives the user the option to not use the graphical smileys.)
