I would recommend doing such a thing with your main page or navigation
page.

However, you should not do this on your Splash page.  ( Splash page is
the page a visitor hits once, then is taken to your main/navigation
page. )

Why?  Well, Geocities and such are making it free for you because of
advertising.  Lose that advertising and they'll end up dropping the free
service that you so enjoy.  Something for nothing is for beggars and
bums. Play as a team.
