A serious response to this post (from a list member who has intermediate
experience with both ASP and PHP).
ASP Benefits -
A server side scripting language that originates from a Corporate
trusted entity. (even though open source is strong now, Microsoft is
still a trusted name that provides support - notice I didn't say quality
support).
As a VB developer, the transition to ASP was easy. Ease and rapid
development were key.
Module support - Developing compiled modules was extremely easy and
portable to any other Microsoft server (dll or dcom). This gives an
added speed advantage - using compiled functions versus a scripting
language. Try writing a module in C - it nearly takes a degree, or
years of experience to write a good one.
There are others, but I would have to write a dissertation. Maybe these
succinct points can point you in a good direction.
You stated that cost isn't a strong factor. Theoretically evaluated,
from a programming language aspect, cost is not an issue for choice of
languages. However, in the real world, where academics in inversely
proportional to development (therefore cost), cost obviously is a major
factor.
I have a degree in computer science. I remember in all my software
development classes discussing cost as a serious issue. Do not throw
away the cost factor because some academic said it wasn't a strong
argument. Go ask a Project Manager if cost is important.

Subject: [pro_php] Why is ASP better
I am trying to put together a dissertation on php v's asp.
I was hoping you could share some of your expertise please, and answer a
few of the following questions. Please note that this is purely for my
own
project to achieve my degree. The answers you give me will only be used
in
my dissertation.
When considering a server-side scripting language, what would you
consider
the main points you look for. Obviously cost is a major consideration
but
it isn't scientific enough for my dissertation. I'd like to compare what
the respected codes can do
What can one language do that the other cant?
What can one language do more efficiently than the other?
What features does one language have over the other?
I basically need to get together some strong arguments that can be put
together.
I need to be able to compare the language like for like and work out
which
one has more advantages over the other in a constructive manor.
I want to do really well and any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can happily send you my final report if you would like.
Thanking you in anticipation
