What is the best platform to build file oriented content subscription and 
protection.  The subscription would be date based so that if that user had 
paid for the product they would be appended to a specific group or 
something and after being authenticated would gain access to the file 
level content.

What applications provide this functinoality.  I know site server has a 
content store but does not specifically follow a date restricted 
subscription model out of the box.  It appears Commerce2000 has now 
dropped Content Management all together and relies on either Sharepoint 
and/or Application Centre and/or Content Management Server for Content 
management.  But none of these solutions appear to offer exactly the 
framework I am after.  

Will I need to build the subscriptions model around one of the content 
management systems?  Any suggestions  or thought provoking comments 
appreciated.
