It uses double size characters to achieve a character set of approx 65k
instead of 128/255 like ASCII. It includes specific characters for 
every
language on earth present and most of the past including Kanji and
variations. It therefore does away with the need for code pages etc 
which
used to control which character 'set' was in use on a particular pc.
