Jimmy,

I would recommend actually using it or playing around with it. I'm
not sure if Microsoft still does this, but for a limited time they had a
trial (30 day) version of .NET available for download on their site.
From my limited personal experience, I have found that VB.NET actually
helps me develop database applications in about half or 3/4 of the time
it took me with VB 6.0. Also, with webforms, I can quickly port most of
my winform applications to the web, which is something that isn't easily
done using VB 6.0 and ASP.
