I agree. We use pointers to our images. It's very efficient.

Hehe
I've done a Picture Archive for SQL Server and Orakel :-)
I Just can say 1 - 2 Gigs are Ok but never go higher then 20 - 30 Gigs.
because of then it can happen that you loose data's or other mysteries :-/
Dave sad it correctly use the FileSystem and just store the reference on
the database server.
File System is the best way when you have extremely large data's!
cheers Kilian

I'm with Jeff on this! I've tried it and the performance on SQL server
went
right down the toilet. It was simpler and more efficient to store the file
in a directory somewhere and just put the pointer in the database.
I tried to warn them, but they didn't believe me. Why didn't they believe
me? Because they were already doing that with jpg & gif files. BIG, BIG,
BIG, HUGE difference in file size and how they work...
As Jeff said...
Don't go there.

It's possible, but not recommended - don't go there...
Basically you store it as a large binary object. Manipulating the thing is
problematic, and it will inflate the size of your database considerably.
You are much better off parking the file in a directory somewhere and
storing only a pointer (i.e. filename) in the database.

Hi,
Is it possible to save .avi, .mpeg2 etc files in MS Acess or SQL Server? Is
it possible to store the complete file in a field of a table (using OLE
Object?) and then later play it from a vb app etc?
Thanks
Niall
