I would disagree. When you create a virtual directory a new application root
is created as well, by default. However this new application root can be
removed by hitting the "Remove" button on the Directory tab of the
Properties dialogue box for that directory.
Likewise, you can create a new application root without having a virtual
directory by right clicking on any existing folder, and hitting the "Create"
button (on the Directory tab).
Virtual Directory <> Application Root
(It's just assumed to be that way by many people because creating a new
virtual directory adds a new application root by default).
I think Imar has answered the other questions...
