Well... as I've mentioned before on this list, Remote Scripting (RS) is a
Microsoft web tech which uses an on-page Java applet to send HTTP requests
back to the server, and then to return the results of the process as a
string, without reloading the page. You can then use the returned value to
update the page, without refreshing it. Here's an idea:
1) Entry area for user: <TEXTBOX>
2) Using the onClick event of a button, send the contents of the
a) to a <DIV> which displays the contents of the chat (concantenate
content using innerHTML)
b) through Remote Scripting back to the server to a SQL table which id's
chat sessions be a unique name (use a GUID value or IDENTITY field).
3) Any user which connects to that chat gets the contents of the chat sent
to the <DIV> on his/her page.
4) While there is no state (as mentioned on another post), there could be
code on the client to send a RS request every quarter-minute (every 15
seconds) to grab the SQL data and return to the <DIV>.
While this idea only emulates a real Java or ActiveX chat object, if
your needs aren't too great it could be an interesting path to try...

Subject: [proasp_howto] Need to update the webpage without using
Dear all expert,
I have problem with my web application. I create web application for
chating and I want the message appear on both side immediately when one of
the user enter the message without using refresh.
For example, I type the message in the text box and press enter. This
message does not shows on chat screen. It needs to refresh before show the
lastest message. How can I do this without using refresh method.
Do I need to create Active X document or something like that ? Please
Thanks in advance
