Default Discussion of Visual Studio version

I have just begun reading ASP .NET 4: in C# and VB. It explains where to download VS 2010 Express, which is no longer available. Will all of this code still run using a newer VS installation? And which version is preferred if so? Or should I scrap this and go to a newer version of ASP? I am new to all of this. Any help is appreciated.

Hi there,

The core concepts should still work. However, lots of things have been changed and improved so you'll have a hard time finding things in the newer IDE per the descriptions in the book.

You could get the latest 4.5.1. version of the book and use Visual Studio 2015. Then when you complete the book, you can use 2017 for your own projects.

Cheers,

Imar

Default Is the 2015 IDE free?

Subject question. Are the studio and web developer components free? The reason I asked is because the www.microsoft.com/express url is not longer valid. I would like to know where to get the IDE to download. Do you have an updated location?

2017 can be downloaded here: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/

Older versions can be found here: https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/older-downloads/

VS comes with a Community license. If you qualify for it, it's free.

Cheers,

Imar
