Default Any sites based on the book?

Post up the url of your site if you've used TheBeerHouse as a starting point :) It would be interesting to see how much people have extended the sample website.

Here they are so far (alphabetized):

There is another thread which also has this topic. Perhaps it should be a sticky.

As noted above there is the Club Volkswagen site: http://www.clubvwnica.com/default.aspx
Aside from being in Spanish it is a largely vanilla translation - some new grahics and text.

There is as much more highly modified site called Ski Stype at:
http://www.skistyle.be/

This site is very attractive site with excellent colors, layout, and graphics. It hardly looks anything like the original Beer House site. It is in German.

There is the Oklahoma CASA site (abused children) at:
http://www.oklahomacasa.org/Default.aspxThis is a rather vanilla site in English.

Lastly there is the Web Opera House at:
http://site197.mysite4now.com/magici...b/Default.aspx
This is my site. I put it up last night. I won't have a permanent URL until the DNS propogates - perhaps later today. At that time it will be available at:
http://weboperahouse.com

My site is semi-vanilla. I used most, but not all, of the Beer House functionality. I dropped the theme selector and the newsletters. I also used a different coding style for many of the new pages. I used the Base Page with inheritance model someplaces and in other places I just used simple web pages. I created some new pages using the declarative CRUD code features in .NET 2.0. In other places I wrote stored procedures (SQL 2005) and a new separate DAL section.

I also have a mixure of the ASP.NET GridViews and the telerik RadGrid. Some of these RadGrids use AJAX - some don't

I replaced most of the standard drop down lists with their telerik equivalents (RadComboBox). I may use some of the extra features of the telerik controls later, but for now I only use the better graphical support and AJAX.

I use the telerik editor for my Artist Ad feature. It is a WYSIWYG editor like the FCKEditor but it has more features. Eventually I expect I will swap out the FCKEditor completely.

OK, you think I have made a monster - a Frankenstein sewed together from parts. Marco Bellinaso has an internally consistant architecture in his Beer House and I have a mish-mash. Of course Marco is something of a genius, so I won't fret about my inferior architecture just now.

Nice work--I totally agree that this post should be sticky! It would be a great motivator for people stuck in chapter 3.

As for your Franken-site, I think that is EXACTLY what Marco intended developers to do when they finished the book. He designed it this way because he intended extensibility/scalability.

Besides, there's usually more than 1 "right" way to program, as you have illustrated.

Well, time for me to humbly open my book where I left off...in chapter 4... :)

i just added a simple gallery to www.clubvwnica.com
nothing from the other world but functional.

It loads the images from external links so that images doesn't full your hosting space.

I'm not good working with design.

The guy from Ski Stype could share his code for us would be good

:D

http://www.ipagan.org.uk

Its still in Beta and we're still adding both content and features (Plus my designer is working on about 6 themes for it)

I've pulled the stores section atm, until we have appropriate product, and I've rectified an error in the dispatch code. but there is more so far than the original I think (esp the links pages) Hopefully within the week I should have sitesearch and complete link and event management in place

Two Minor Graphic Ideas:

Number #1 -

You can spiff up the appearance of the buttons without changing any functionality by simply creating a button class in the theme css file.

.button
{
    background-image: url(Images/btnTemplate.gif);
    cursor: hand;
    color: white;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    font-family: Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS', Arial;
    font-size:x-small;
    background-color: transparent;
    text-align: center;
    height: 22px;
    width: 101px;
    border-top-style: none;
    border-right-style: none;
    border-left-style: none;
    border-bottom-style: none;
}

Then where there is one of those ugly gray rectangle buttons just add a class.

<asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnThing" Text="Do Thing" OnClick="btnThing_Click" CssClass="Button" />

For this to work you also need a graphic button template in the template images folder. This button should be 100 by 21 for this example. This is a wide button template you will probably want a thinner one too.

Number #2 -

The unique part of the header graphic should extend no more than about 720 pixels before it becomes a consistent background that merges with the headerSlice.gif background. The header graphic is 780 pixels wide. The login box will overlay the header graphic otherwise for those who run lower resolutions or those who run their browser with the Explorer panel open (e.g.Favorites)

I solved this problem by lowering the login box slightly and putting the title above it.

My site has finally had its DNS propogate. It is now seen at:
http://weboperahouse.com

Currently I am adding a multipage Wizard for Ad creation and improving some of the many new admin pages that the public doesn't see. The nice thing about the Beer House is that you get so much to start with that you can make up a rich full featured site because you don't have to worry about anything that you didn't add yourself. The core of the site works as advertised. My new content will work too - sooner or later.

Hi,

my site skistyle (with an L :) is actually in dutch.
Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding the design => what I did is the following :
Created PSD and sliced it (actually a friend did that)
Based on that design, I modified the masterpage, page content and usercontrols (I don't use webparts (yet))
and actually that's it. I also replaced the MS menubar by custum divs (beter for SEO)

What I'm going to do next is replace some of the controls used by CSS controls (again for SEO) and include some Ajax functionality.

I'm still looking for a goog picture gallery to include in the site (the one I'm using now is not written conform the beerhouse model)

Koen
