You are right, sorry for being such a bug. I am trying to learn all this stuff on my own and it is definitely not as easy as some other stuff I have taught myself.

It appears that all of the information is being read from the web.config properly.

No problem at all. This is a Beginner's book, isn't it? ;-)

One final thing to check: does mySmtpClient.Credentials contain your correct user name and Gmail e-mail address? If that's the case, everything really looks fine and it must be something with your network / security configuration.

Cheers,

Imar

Yep it sure does. That is so very odd!

Any idea why it would also not work on the hosting site where I uploaded it at?? (godaddy)

For now I can set it to dump to my hard drive and continue on with the book, but at some point I have to be able to make this work. I am also taking what I learn here and building a website for someone, and at some time I will need this or similar features to work.

Thanks a ton for your time!

If I amnot mistaken, GoDaddy has their own mail servers which you should use. There's a fair chance they block this port. Check their FAQs for instructions on configuring your mail settings.

My pleasure.

Cheers,

Default SMTP for Godaddy.com

Samuel: were you able to figure out the settings for gmail smtp? I am having the same problem.

Using Visual Web Developer (VWD), I can send email ok using:

host="smtp.gmail.com" enableSs1="true" userName="xxnamexx" password="pwd" port="465"

However, when I deploy my webpage to my site on godaddy.com, it doesn't work.

*****************
BTW, here are the correct smtp settings for using Godaddy.com's mail server if you want to use your @domain.com mail instead of gmail.

External server (e.g., using VWD):
host="smtpout.secureserver.net" userName="spell@it.outfully" password="pwd"

Internal server (hosted on godaddy web server):
host="relay-hosting.secureserver.net" userName="spell@it.outfully" password="pwd"

I was not able to get it to work either way, but if you are unable to get it to work with godaddy then that is most likely an issue with the hosting service not your code. Try using an address from godaddy that is associated with your domain instead. I am going to try that soon myself.

Ok, so instead of using the gmail account I used my cableone.net account, my primary email address (my ISP is Cable One) and it works from my machine locally but not on the godaddy site. I will set up my email address later on godaddy and try that and it should work.

At least I know it was a gmail problem and not a problem with my code, it made my whole day!!!

Default It works on godaddy.com

Sam,

Just to clarify. I didn't get it working using the gmail smtp either.

But I did get it working using the godaddy smtp settings using my personal domain email. If you want to go that route (assuming that you use godaddy as hosting service):

1) create email account at godaddy (e.g., email@yourdomain.com)
2) using the following in config file: <network host="relay-hosting.secureserver.net" userName="email@yourdomain.com" password="pwd" />

p.s., if anyone gets the gmail or yahoo smtp settings to work, please post settings as I am curious; I am not referring to getting it to work on VWD, it does for me; But when I post the webpage to a hosting service, it doesn't work. Thanks.

I got this to work and I thank you for it, using the GoDaddy email address works like a charm. Or at least I think so, it says mail sent but I have not received it yet. I will work on that later.

As far as getting GMail to work with GoDaddy, you can not. The ports required for their SMTP are closed with GoDaddy and there is nothing you can do about it, so sending ssl enabled email is probably not going to happen when hosting on their servers.
