Default Direction of Control-Drag Operation

On page 300 of the Snow Leopard version of the text, instruction #3 has the reader connect the first name editable text field to the Email Controller instance action textFieldChanged by starting from the First Name editable box. However in instructions #5 and #6 when connecting the last name and email editable boxes to the Email Controller instance, the text says to now start from the textFieldChanged: circle in the standalone Connections list of the Email Controller. The direction in #5 and #6 seems opposite to the direction in #3 and to the guidance in the How It Works section immediately following. Is there a reason why the direction of the control-drag operation is different here?
