Default question about cmp - newbie

Hello,
I am new to assembly language programming and reading the book, I would like to ask about cmp instruction (at&t syntax):

cmpl %eax, %ecx
ja label
does it mean jump to label if eax is above ecx, or if ecx is above eax?
and which instruction would be right here ja or jg?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Default

cmpl %eax,%ecx
ja label

it jump to label when ecx is above eax.

i think using ja or jg both right here.
it uses ja when you treat them as unsigned-number and uses jg signed-number.
