Have you tried "Eclipse"?
Give it a go, "http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5-200906111540/eclipse-SDK-3.5-win32.zip"
It is very good.

Take a look at this page, "http://www.eclipse.org/documentation/".
Then you may choose to buy a few books. I actually saw a book, http://my.safaribooksonline.com/9780470020050, that I think it looks OK. I don't have it tho.
You can search for more Java or Eclipse books on the site. I bought from them before and impressed with their service.
Have fun with Eclipse
