Datawarehouse and PowerPivot
Hi, Ron
I got your book and I started to read it. I don't have much experience with this, so I want to know about data warehouses and PowerPivot? I don't understand that concept, for example my company wants to implement PowerPivot, so do we need to create data warehouse or data mart (SQL 2008 R2) and create tables for example like those from Contoso sample database to put it on that server or we can use already existing Excel sheets and data of our company? Any help to understand this, please
Thank you

Can't get past Chapter 2
Hello Ron, I purchased your book and have not been able to get past the second chapter because I get an import error for FactSalesQuota - 'Memory error: Allocation failure: Not enough storage is available to process this command.'
I have a 6 Gig RAM laptop and am using 32bit and I think the issue would resolve with 64bit, however, I need to be able to use 32bit. I tried filtering and removing all services so I was only running PowerPivot, but with no luck. Will I be able to work through the exercises in your book with 32bit? Can you help?

To import the FactSalesQuota table you will probably need to make sure that the id column on the table isn't included in the import.
This is because these values are uniques identifiers and therefore don't compress - making the size of the imported data much larger. You don't need these columns and they shouldn't really be on the source database anyway as they serve no real purpose. You can do the same for all the fact tables in those sample dbs.
Hope that helps.

Ron, I am in the process of reading your book.
Ron, I am in the process of reading your book that I bought from Barnes & Noble but when I received your book I was disappointed that you did not include a cd with the code nor did you include a PDF version of your book either on a cd or as a download. After buying the hardcopy book I don't want to pay more for a PDF version. I need to have the option to read your book on my computer because last year I lost an eye and it is difficult to read the hardcopy. I have successfully downloaded the book's code from this wrox site. I have seen other posts that individuals can not restore/attach the SQL Server database Microsoft Contos BI Demp Dataset for Retail Industy to SQL Server 2012 Express. With Microsoft's help, I have obtained a modified version of this database that DOES restore/attach to SQL Server 2012 Express and it works great in PowerPivot for Excel 2010. I would be willing to trade this modified database for a copy of your book in PDF format.
