Default Can't see web part properties after applying a custom fixed width master page

I have been working through the book and after chapter 8 I started looking at adding web part to the page. The web part (Contact Details) added correctly but I can't change the properties.

Two things happen, one the dropdown menu cuts off and you can't see the edit link.

The other, if you use the ribbon to select the web part properties the window pops up very quickly and then disappears.

I am pretty sure they are both having a overflow issue but I don't know where to find the error. I can't use the developers tools in IE8 because the window is gone too quickly.

Thanks,

Dan

Update to my first post:

I fixed the issue with the menu being cut off with setting the min-height:300 for .customBodyRight. This gave it enough room to display the menu.

It took me a while to find where the issue lives, but I finally found it. The class .ms-ToolPaneOuter is falling into the overflow area outside of my centered content. Since I have overflow:hidden for the body set it causes it to "disappear".

Anyone have any recommendations for using a fixed width page and still being able to see/change a web parts' properties?

Did anyone experience this when writing the book? I see on page 278 section 2 that the web part properties, when launched appear on the left side of the page. So that means something (CSS?, DIV?) moves that from the right to the left of the screen.

Thanks,

Dan

It's been awhile since your post, but I've come across the same thing. What solution, if any, did you come up with?

Many thanks!
