Default Problem saving modified masterpage

Hello,

I am reading chapter 4 of the book and attempting to make a very basic change to a copy of the v4.master file. Everything appears to be working, my change appears the design view within SPD. However, when I save, check in and approve the masterpage upon loading my site I recieve this error:
Error
''<asp:Literal' is not a valid virtual path.
Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation.
Correlation ID: 4c4866cc-13b2-4a1c-aa06-e0a4bd547b32

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

You have an ASP control in your custom master page that SharePoint Designer is butchering. It's monkeying with the ASP syntax. Re-paste your control code; you'll need to do this every time you open the master page in SharePoint Designer. Alternatively, download the master page via the browser and edit it in a text editor.
