Default Configure DNS for sharepoint 2013

Hello

I am very new to SharePoint, having never even used it before. I am setting this up for my wife. I have completed installation successfully as per chapter three (three servers). There are four web applications, including my.contoso.com80 and portal.contoso.com80 (also admin and default) in IIS. I can log into the portal site collection by typing http://portal.contoso.com but when I attempt to connect to http://my.contoso.com I get a page not found error. I suspect I have a fundamental misunderstanding somewhere? I have DNS configured as standard by my Server 2012 R2 Domain. Do I need to change something in DNS, if so what?

Regards

Pub.

To clarify The my.contoso.com application hosts a 'my sites' collection. unfortunately the book is a little hazy about how to log into the personal sites after creation.

Ok, figured it. Just needed to sort out my DNS entries. All works well. excellent book, I was able to set up a three server SharePoint from scratch, starting as a complete novice.
