Default rexx/sql sqlconnect( ) problem

I am new to rexx/sql and mysql. I recently downloaded those and rexx. I have the book Rexx Programmer's Reference. The mysql shell command 'show databases;' properly lists the two supplied databases. I ran a shortened version of the script on p.235 of that book. SQLLoadfuncs worked, but I got error messages, Database error, and Access denied for user 'ODBC' @ 'localhost'.
I then loaded the MS ODBC driver and tried again. Now I got: SQLerror is: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
I note on p.237 of Fosdick's book (above) the words "....even when the problem is something so simple as a databse that needs to be started up". How do I get connected?
