I wanted to reload the opener window and close the popup so I tried...

window.opener.reload();
window.close();

Which didnt work... then I tried something I found online...

opener.location.reload();
self.close();

And that worked... does anyone know why?

You probably could have stated:

window.opener.location.reload(), but the location object seems to do the reloading of the page.
