How to connect/permissions to SQLServer

I am at Page 63 and have created the AD for SP_farm. My SQLServer is LongSQL2012.longsoho.local and the server name is LONGSQL2012\MSSQLSERVER2012

I at the first step in configuring SP 2013. On page 63 of the book it is about creating the farm. I entered this elevated script:

New-SPConfigurationDataBase -DatabaseName SharePoint_Config -DatabaseServer LongSQL2012\MSSQLSERVER2012 -AdministrationContentDatabaseName SharePoint_Admin_Content

It follows the description and I enter logon LONGSOHO\SP_farm and the passphrase.

Here is where it fails:

Cannot connect to database master at SQL Server at LONGSQL2012\MSSQLSERVER2012. The database might not exist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it.

AT LONGSQL2012, the serve is setup and the master db exits. I added a login for SP_farm with dbcreator, public, securityadmin and serveradmin roles.

How do I configure the connection to SQLServer to get the farm created and the install moving forward.

Guidance appreciated.
