Default Unable to connect to server

i am using WinXp prof and SQL Server 2000 Evaluatio edition.
i got the following error when i m try to work on it.
Unable to connect to server <SQL Server instance name> Server: Msg 17, Level 16, State 1 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]

i m new to SQL Server pls help me

Where you able to connect to it before?

1.Make sure to use local system account
2.Check you are using tcp/ip
3.Check make sure you not using multiprotocol
4.Make sure you have install SP3A
5.Install the latest MDAC (2.8)
