Of course the other way you can do this is to serialize "by hand", something like

<xsl:template match="*">
&lt;<xsl:value-of select="name()"/>&gt;
<xsl:apply-templates/>
&lt;/<xsl:value-of select="name()"/>&gt;
</xsl:template>

Not too difficult if there are no attributes and namespaces around.
