Wrap the call-template in a variable:

<xsl:variable name="x">
  <xsl:call-template>
    ...
  </xsl:call-template>
</xsl:variable>

and you can then use $x as a string value, e.g.

<xsl:if test="starts-with($x, 'abc')"
