Default connecting to external system without windows authentication

I have a couple questions I hope someone can help me with. We just installed a dev environment of SP 2010 and are in the beginning stages of migrating our MOSS environment. We want to take advantage of the BCS capabilities to connect to our Financial system, which stores employee information. This system uses it's own stored usernames and password, not Windows. It also has APIs that we must go through in order to add and edit data. I want each user to be identified so the external system can record who makes changes to records. From reading chapter 8, this sounds like a Delegation model. The book says that only Kerberos supports Delegation. But, if I use the SSS, do I really need to use Kerberos?
