Default Storing and passing global variables within a session

Hi,
I'm new to Apex but have years of Forms experience. In a nutshell, i want to capture a selected id...store it in a global variable(or equivalant) and use that for the length of the session. i see the screen zero in apex, similar to Forms..but i am not sure if it accomplishes the same task as screen zero in forms. As well, i see the application item, but am not sure if that fits this purpose as well. At least, i have not gotten it to work...
In forms, i would simply define a variable on screen zero, write to it..and use it whenever i needed within the session.

Any guidance would be most appreciated...
Thanks in advance,
Chuck
