I would take the Makalaba's advice on this one. Linux - Apache - MySQL - PHP, or LAMP is a common platform. You can substitute Windows for the Linux portion, of course. I second Makalaba's motion because you will find more resources online and in print using PHP and Apache then any other webserver. This is the platform I used when I taught myself PHP, as I am sure about 85% of the other PHP developers used.
