You can try "Head First Java" from O'Reilly also. Quite good book to learn Java. The decision is yours :o)
Regarding the exercises:
In my opinion the best start is to use the javac compiler from the SUN (part of the J2SE SDK).
If You want to use an IDE, You can use Eclipse, which is an open source product and You can download it from
