Hi Brian,

Yeah, they can be a pain, but it can also be really cool when they work.
I created a number of custom controls, and it always was pretty difficult to get them to work; especially design-time support. But once they did, they really worked great.
One book I found very useful is "Developing Microsoft ASP.NET Server Controls and Components" by Kothari and Datye (Microsoft Press).
