access thread: Database splitting over the web

Message #1 by leehambly@y... on Thu, 21 Jun 2001 16:21:41
Possibly a daft question - unfortunately I cannot check (whilst at work)

due to not having the option to split databases on the installation of

Access I have at work.

I want to be able to split a database and put the back-end on the web and

then users would access it using the front-end rather than a browser or

using asp. I have no problem splitting and redirecting the split, though I

cannot try it, just need to find out if it will accept a web address

rather than the usual mapped drive location?

That would be cool--but AFAIK, it's not possible. You can link tables using

UNC's (e.g., \\ServerName\ShareName) but your back-end has got to be on a

lan-accessible share. Your options for getting this sort of functionality

include Data Access Pages, or Active Server Pages--neither of which are

especially tempting, if you've already put a lot of trouble into coming up

with an Access-based UI...
