access thread: Combo Box

Message #1 by "George Oro" <george@c...> on Sat, 1 Jun 2002 18:55:37 +0400
Hi Guys,

I have a search combo box with 3 columns option for search and the bound column is Column1

Column1 (FirstName) | Column2 (LastName) | Column3 (Company) |

Is it possible:
1. Let say if I type "Geo" automatic my combo will list the first name start with Geo. (Normal)
2. BUT Then if I want to extend my search to the next column till the third column or till I reach my desired record without leaving
the same combo box or action and bound the Column1 to my combo box, IS IT POSSIBLE?

Cheers,
George

I've never run into a combo box that could do this in any application, let
alone Access. I don't see how it could be done other than building some
kind of psuedo-combo box that is actually a form. However, I have done
similar things on a form. You can set up the first combo box to be the
main search. Once the user leaves the box (with Tab or Enter or Clicking
on another combo box) you can then filter the remaining combo boxes by the
value chosen in the first combo box, and so on across. I don't know if
this is what you want to accomplish but that's what I have done in the
past.

Doing it with one combo box would mean after they select from the first
column (FirstName) then you would have to refresh the combo box to be
filtered by that selection, change the RowSource and bound column to do
the second search and I don't even know if that would work sussessfully.

Good luck. I will be watching to see if anyone comes up with something.

Amy

Hmmm... interesting premis. I don't think it's possible without some
fancy reprogramming of the combo box and a combination of SQL and
refreshing constantly. You're better of having three combo boxes.
Someone would pick a last name which would, in turn, refresh the other two
combos and filter them. Then he would pick a first name, which would
refresh the third combo box.

Actually, picking a value from ANY combo box should filter the other two
no matter which order you pick them. BTW, I'd pick last name first, not
first name, because picking a last name is more likely to narrow down the
search faster. You may have only two or three "Hancock" on the list but
you may have lots of "John".
