aspdotnet_website_programming thread: make.bat alternative?

Message #1 by "Kyle Green" <kyle@n...> on Mon, 20 May 2002 00:37:42
I was not planning to use the studio to build this project, but there are
no instructions on how to do it without the studio. First, I develop on a
separate dev server, not localhost. Second, studio won't build it anyway
(on my system)

Is it reasonable to ask the editors or authors for a make.bat so we can
build this thing from command line?

The idea of the book is great, but if the site does not run, it is a big
waste of time. I have already spent over 12 hours just trying to get the
sample running. I may not be a pro, but I do have other dotnet sites
running, so I don't think is is just me :)

THanks,

Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Having used a collection of non VS editors (I tried 5) I strongly
recommend Visual Studio for productive ASP.NET work.

I tried to "refactor" the site to a different URL than localhost/***. I
suspect I was close (about 40 changes among source files) but VS gave
some meaningless message about "http://Localhost:" (yep it was formatted
just like that!!) so I went for the default. I haven't tried it here
but I guess that VS will move this to another URL painlessly (based on
previous relocations).

Having been unhelpful about your editing plans I'll throw in something
that I use elsewhere. It's a generic make file that works for me:

IF NOT EXIST bin mkdir bin
%SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\csc /t:library
/out:bin\YourDLLNameHere.dll /r:System.dll /r:System.Web.dll
/r:System.Xml.dll /r:System.Data.dll /r:bin\YourOwnUtilities.dll
/recurse:*.cs >> MakeLog.txt

(Quick summary. It creates an MSIL compile in the bin directory, it
creates bin if it doesn't exist and it appends a log to a file (so you
can review what happened at your leisure).)

Mike Gale, Decision Engineering (NZ) Ltd.

Kyle,

Have you looked at the devenv.exe command line switches on
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/vsintro
7/html/vxgrfCommandLineSwitches.asp?

We use that to automate our build process.

Hope this helps,
Minh.
