aspdotnet_website_programming thread: PhilePageBase and Control Library projects (tutor?)

Message #1 by "Timothy Kelley" <webologist@m...> on Wed, 5 Mar 2003 18:34:06
I'm confused about this class. In the code from wrox there is a folder
called PhilePageBase with a class library project and the PhilePage.cs
class inside it. Then under the project there is another PhilePage.cs
class. Which one do I use or which one does it use and why are there two?

I also have some confusion when it says to create a class library on pages
58 and 61. In the downloaded code the class library for Controls and
PhilPageBase doesn't show up as a class library like the other class
libraries like Core and others.

Can someone clue me in on this structure?
I wonder if anyone would be interested in tutoring me through this book.
I don't do this for a living but I could afford a small fee.
I have written asp.net applications, I just need some refinning.

I am very confused about the very same thing!

I don't understand how the namespaces work and how this class project that
is created on the top of page 58 suddenly becomes the base class for all
other forms in the project. Somewhere it had to be setup but its beyond
me to figure out where!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I haven't got there yet but it looks like the class PhilePage will be used
other forms in the project - not the project in chapter 3 but the entire
ThePhile project. For example you will se ethe code:

public class Forum : Wrox.ThePhile.Web.PhilePage

in the chapter related to forums.

At this point, in chapter 3, there are no events to be handled on the Home
Page draft so there is no need to write a library for this form.

BTW A good way to learn is to follow this book but use your own directories,
workspace, and class names. The code can be almost the same but if I use my
names I understand what is going on much better than if I blindly follow the
book examples.

Professional Design Patterns in VB.NET:
Building Adaptable Applications

Want to know how design patterns bring reusable
design and adaptabilty to your applications? How
to recognize the need for a design pattern
solution? How to select, design, and implement
the right patterns? How parts of the .NET Framework
(like the .NET Data Providers and .NET Remoting)
take advantage of design patterns? This book
presents a practical approach to using design
patterns in VB.NET, by focusing on the relevance
of design patterns in the different tiers of a
distributed n-tier architecture.

They are using their page class already - on pages 65-68 they discuss its
use in error handling which is a big issue for me since I can't get their
example to work in my own web app. I haven't been able to figure out how
they set this up. I agree with you that it is the foundation for many
things yet to come in the book.

I have been spending a lot of time "hunting" around and I did find entries
in the global.asax file which should have been mentioned in the book! A
simple "sidebar" with the steps would help a lot!

So, I still don't know the step by step process to create a new page class
and if anyone out there can help it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks very much!
