I decided to go ahead and try it with those files and so far so good. I'm
in the 4th chapter now.

As an alternative, have a look at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/php4win32/
I downloaded the latest version of PHP4, which has a lot of the additional
extension .dll's that you may not already have, but may require as you
progress
