beginning_php thread: Installing PHP4 Alongside PWS QUESTION

Message #1 by "Andrew Kinard" <mecaham@h...> on Sat, 18 May 2002 23:41:07
OK I'm new to this so this might be a stupid question but...
I've been trying to learn PHP4 out of the Beginning PHP book and I've
gotten to the PWS instilation and the PHP4 thing.
I went to the site the authors posted for me to get the PHP info
(http://php4.de/) and it would not let me in. It said there was a
comunication proble with the server.
SO My question is:
Can anyone else get into that site?
If not can someone give me a site were I can get the info from that would
help me get through all of this?

Thanks

Try connecting to this server later.

I've never had to get anything from that site. I've said it before and
I'll say it again: I don't know why the book's authors recommend that site
over the main PHP site. Maybe one of the authors maintains the php4win.de
site and makes money off of click throughs and banner ads. =)

Go to http://www.php.net/ and familiarize with that site. Not just the
downloads area, but the online manual as well. It's been the most valuable
and useful source of information for me. 99% of the questions I answer on
these mailing lists are done with at least one link to that site.

Take care,

nik

p.s. php.net has mirrors all over the world. The dropdown to select your
closest mirror is at the bottom right corner of any page in the site.

This is the reason they have in the book:

"While you would normally obtain the latest version of PHP4 from
http://www.php.net/, unfortunately the version of PHP distributed via that
site is only a basic installation, and doesn't support all the features we
need. Instead, we recommend you go to http://php4win.de/, and download
their latest, non-development, stable release."

Thanks for the quote, but as far as I'm concerned, that's just not the case.
Unless the guys at php4win.de are modifying the source code of PHP to do
some windows-specific tricks that aren't available from the main site's
distribution, that quote just doesn't make sense at all.

The installer package available from www.php.net/ doesn't install many
extensions, but the available zip file contains all the necessary extension
dll's that you need to do anything in the books and more.

If there's something that the php4win.de site offers that isn't available
from php.net, I'd love to hear about it!

Take care,

nik
