Default Installing Quickstart

I am having a problem in installing the Quickstart which is part of the Web Matrix installation.

book Title: Beginning Dynamic Websites
Last four digits of the ISBN: 7922
Page number: 16

Problem Description:

My PC is running Windows XP Professional. I had Visual Studio.NET installed on my PC. But it was a while ago, I cannot remember if I had IIS installed at that time. I decided to go ahead to install Web Matrix. First of all, it did not give me the warning that you described at bottom of page 13, and I was able to finish the installation of the SDK.

Then I followed the instructions on Page 16 and successfully installed the .NET Framework Sample Database. After a reboot, I tried to install the Quickstart. But now I ran into a message saying I did not have IIS on my PC and would not let me proceed.

I tried to add IIS as a Windows Component using the Add/Remove Programs utility. In the generated list, IIS was checked in its checkbox and was shaded (Does this confirm the IIS was installed after all?). Anyway I clicked "Next" and it seemed ran OK (I am not sure though if it added or actually deleted the IIS).

Tried again to install Quickstart and still the same problem.

So I tried the tricks described in the configuring information provided by running the aspnet_regiis.exe and the iisreset.exe from the command line before installing Quickstart. It still did not work.

My questions:

How can I tell whether or not I have IIS installed on my PC?
What could be the problem?
What else can I try?

Click on the details button after selecting the Internet Information Service in Add/Remove Component dialog box and make sure that world wide web service is checked.

Once Installed correctly you can locate the IIS in following location.

Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Internet Information Service

Its also possible that IIS is not running, if so click on the Internet Information Service and expand the tree on the left side and right click on the Default Web Site and choose start if its available. In case if this service is already started only two options for stopping and restrating the service is available.
