Default Anyone Have A Review?

Well I lucked out yet again. I was smart enough not to fork out the $35.00 USD for "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" by Kevin Yank (Sitepoint.com). Instead I had my local library do it (yes I know I paid for it through public funding).

All I can say is this. The book should have never made it to print, not for $35.00 I could have gotten a book 200 - 300 times bigger from Wrox or even Sams Publishing for that amount. It's not even the number of pages that kills me, its the content.

The information he presented can be found in any tutorial site. What would have made this book different you ask? Kevin could of incorporated basic features into his DB-Driven site. For instance:
  • a site search engine with relevancy statistics
  • or database driven META tags and page titles

So now I do research before I purchase any book online. What I want to know is if Glasshaus' Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development is a stud or a dud?

Best Regards,
Dan Jallits

Well, I helped edit it. If it's sheer mass of pages you're after you'll be disappointed. We didn't go a heap on killing trees in glassahaus: we tried to accentuate the quality over the sheer quantity ;). The book is a little short of 400 pages, if memory serves (I obviously /do/ have a copy, but it isn't to hand). However, its about the only book on the topic of using Dreamweaver MX for PHP web development, appart from its follow on title "DW MX: Advanced PHP".

It does have a few drawbacks. First, like a lot of books written immediately prior to the release of PHP4.2 it fell into the trap of assuming the availability of global variables. This was fixed in leter reprints, though. Feedback I dealt with during my time at glasshaus also indicated that more coverage for OS X users would have been advantagous.

If you have a copy of Dreamweaver MX and a yearning to use it for PHP Web Development, you could go a lot worse. You may get a more independant review from someone else, yet, but since I am no longer involved in the book, I hope I can be cleared of any accusations of bias, (in this regard, at least ;).

Dan

I originally obtained this book through glasshaus to use for a dreamweaver mx php class I am trying to put together. It is tough to get those 2 topics together & this book is very good from that standpoint.

There are a few typos throughout the book, but in general I am impressed with how clear it is.

Chapter 9 has been a dead end for me however, as this seems to have been written very independently of the other chapters. It refers to files we do not have, & also has many typos. After recreating these chapters 3 separate times, & spent hours trying to correct, I have given up on getting this to work. If anyone has the files working for this chapter, I would love to hear from you, or get a copy of these files.

The other drawback to this book is that it has no files to use. Everything has to be done from scratch and in lesson order.

Unless I can get corrected info for chapter 9, I will not be able to use this book for my class which is very frustrating. There also doesnt seem to be any support for this book from the publisher regarding these issues.

I hope that helps!

Has anybody got hold of the "errata" from the Glasshaus website, it's no longer available.
It's frustrating trying to sort out what my coding problems are if the code provided is in error!

Cheers

Jim

Hi All

This is really basic.

I have windows xp professional on my machine.

I am about to down load PHP from www.php.net and apache from http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi I will then follow the instructions as detailed on pages 22 and 23. (I assume that where web server is mentioned it can be a virtual server on my machine). I will then down load MYSQL from http://www.mysql.com Then I hope to start to learn to develop a small web site.

Will this site comply with a site developed on a Linux machine?

Colleagues will want to add loads of code which will have generated on Linux platforms or they will take my code and add it to theirs.

Will it work?

Looking forward to your comments.

Jacky Kenna
