Hi Scott,

I wondered why you had stopped posting.

Anyway I have finished the decorating and so am back getting to grips with SQL Server 2005 Express. Just hope the wet and cold weather continues so that my wife doesn't force me to tidy the garden.

I must admit I found the book a bit confusing at the time with its talk of temporary directories etc. but this is what it seems to mean.

Chapter 4: The idea is to commence the chapter by using the project "MyFirstApp" that was created as a result of compoleting the 'Try It Out' tasks in Chapter 3.

Page 60: Try It Out creates a second ("Book") table

Pages 61-62: Steps 1 to 5 perform the physical linking together of the two tables that now make up the database "MyDB.mdf" that holds the data of the project "MyFirstApp". I did not find any errors in these steps as described in the book. IF YOU DO NOT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THESE STEPS THE TABLES WILL NOT BE LINKED & hence you will not get Figure 4-4 on page 65 when you come to create and work on the new project "MasterDetail".

Step 5: Merely populates the "Book" table
Step 6: Says close the connection but as you will be creating the new project "MasterDetail" then you can save and close the project at this point.

If you can descibe your problem with regard to Steps 1 to 5 in more detail then I might be able to provide some more advice.

Regards

Weeble

Hi Weeble,

I studied the Steps 1-5 on Pages 61-62 very hard and read some articles from MSDN Library about Building Datacentric Applications in Visual Basic 2005. I tried to do the MasterDetail program for the 4th time and I still could not get it right - I think I missed some things in linking the Person and Book Tables. I tried to save all the files and I got the following:
  Post-Save Notifications
Errors were encounted during the save process. Some
  database objects were not saved.
  'Person' table saved successfully.
  'Book' table
   -Unable to create relationship 'FK_Book_Person'.
The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the
   FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Book_Person.....

Now I am lost completely. Do you see any hits/problems/ solutions from what I just described above? Please help and advise if you can.

Thanks,
Scott Chang

I am stuck a bit earlier at step 1 on page 64

every think looked all right up to this point - though I am not sure about the "temporary directory" - I did find MyDB and it was added to the project and shows up in the Data Source.

Step 1 on page 64 asks to set the person node to Detail instead of Grid.

I don't get the options shown. Instead when I right-click on the person node I get the following options:

Add a new source
Configure dataset
Refresh

Did I make some error earlier?
