Default some questions about sqlserver express

Hi,

I'm new to sqlserver express 2005, so i have some questions:
1)i wish to know what's the difference between a .mdf file and a sqlserver express 2005 database. Is the .mdf file independant (linked to) of the sqlserver engine (just like a .mdb Access file is independant of the Access engine)?
2) Does i need to install sqlserver 2005 in order to access the .mdf file in aspnet (for accessing a .mdb Access file, it's not necessary to install MS Access)?
3) Is it possible to create several .mdf file with the same name but in other directories?
4) to finish: what's the difference between sqlserver express and MS sqlserver (scability, speed, amount of transactions ...)?

Thanks
Phil
