Excerpts for Books are Horrible

What's up with excerpts for the technical books. They are horrible. All they have are intros about the author's life and hobbies. There is an excerpt of index as if someone ever buys a book based on it's index. Before I buy a book, I would like to browse into the book a little deeper and not just the first chapter. This is not a novel book store. I'm not going to get sucked into buying the book based on the gripping knowledge that the author likes jello. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea. I want to see the authors style/topic knowledge/madness to his methods. I don't want to buy a book base on his dedication to his wife/parents for getting him to where he is, though he is entitle to that...but I, as a consumer don't really care.

You're right, no doubt. We had been doing a better job picking a "meaty" chapter for the excerpts but lately it looks like we've defaulted to a lot of "chapter 1" selections. I'll see what I can do to remind everyone involved to please try to pick something more representative than chapter 1.

On the other hand, we do know from research that a lot of our readers do like to skim the index. They might have a handful of topics they want to ensure are covered in a book before they buy it. While that may not be the way you browse books before buying, we do know that the indexes are useful to some readers.
