You could use SQL Server 2008 Express Edition, which is totally free.

If it only were that simple! When i try to install sql server express 2008 i only get error message:

"Sql Server Express 2008 with service pack 1 is incompatible with Microsoft Sql server express 2005. In order to use Sql server Express 2008 you must upgrade to Visual Studio 2008 express with sp1."

Very weird since i already have Visual Studio 2008 pro with sp1??? However when i try to install Visual Studio express 2008 with sp1, then i get this message:

"Sql server Express 2008 with service pack 1 is incompatible with Microsoft Sql server express 2005. Visual web developer 2008 express with sp1 requires sql server express 2008 with service pack 1."

But how in hell, i cant install sql server 2008 express with sp1 without getting the first errormessage. I have sql server 2005 express and sql server 2005 developer edition installed. Do i have to uninstall those first....that would also be weird!

When installing SQL Express 2008, the default instance name is SQLEXPRESS.

Unfortunately, this is the same default as SQL Express 2005. That means if you have SQL 2005 Express installed, you probably already have an SQLEXPRESS instance, which is a conflict.

The trick is, when installing SQL Express 2008, to change the name of the default instance to something different. Mine is named SQLEXPRESS2008.

I have SQL 2005 Express, SQL 2005 Developer, SQL 2008 Express, and SQL 2008 Developer on my main machine, and they all work.

Yep it was the instance name that was the problem, renamed it and it worked! Thanks...

The entity model was created using SQL 2008 since that is the latest version. Unfortunately models have to be used against the SQL version they were generated against.

I have been told about a way to mannually change the XML, but before I post a solution to that I want to verify it and I have not had the free cycles to do this yet.
